Trip Highlights
This is the ultimate adventure for the intrepid soul! Located in the far eastern corner of the Taklimakan desert in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the Lop Nur was once the largest inner basin in the world, providing life to the otherwise arid desert, and supported some great ancient civilizations, the kingdoms of Loulan, and Milan. This lake had always been a mystery to mankind due to its shifting nature. Some believed that the disappearance of some great civilizations in the desert had a lot to do with the shift of the lake water over the years. Many expeditions had been set out over the years in search for this “Wandering Lake”, including a famous one led by the Swedish explorer Sven Hedin, in the late 19th century. In 1972, the lake had completely dried up from its last see position in 1928, which measured 3,100 sq kilometers, leaving another mystery for the world to solve.
Our expedition takes us into the heart of the dried-up Lop Nur Lake. Over the eight-day journey, besides the amazing landscapes which ranges from sandy desert, to snow capped alpine mountains and lakes, you'll also receive hospitality from the local people who have lived on this amazing land for hundreds of generations.
