Description:
Like a lost kingdom within fairy tale, the beautiful Lugu Lake is tucked away within the mountains of Northeast Yunnan province bordering the provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan. Lugu Lake is a high mountain plateau lake, located 202 km northeast of Lijiang. It is at 2685 meters above sea level, consists of 48.5 square km in area and is about 93.5 m at its deepest point. It is surrounded by mountains and has eight islands and many bays and beaches.
Besides the tranquil natural setting, Lugu Lake is also well-known for being the home of the Mosuo people, among the last remaining matrilineal societies in the world. The Mosuo people, a small tribe that is considered a sub clan of Naxi people. The Mosuo currently do not have a written language. The Mosuos still retain as a matrilineal society, and still practices the unique customs of "walking marriages".
